Domain Management

What is a domain name?

A domain name is the essence of your company's online identity. It is the address your customers use to find information about your products and services on the web. Domain names allow Internet users to type in a name, such as yourdomain.com, to identify a numeric Internet Protocol (IP) address such as 207.15.12.173. The purpose of domain names is to allow users connected to the Internet the ability to find web sites without having to memorize the long, numerical (IP) addresses that actually locate the computers or servers on the Internet.

What does it mean to "register" a domain name?

There is a central registry of all domain names on the Internet. For your domain name to become a part of the registry, your domain name needs to be added to that registry. "Registering" a domain name means you are associated with that domain name for the period of the registration.

Who should register a domain name?

Anyone thinking about establishing a presence on the Internet should register a domain name. You don't have to utilize it right away, but you can reserve it for your future use. Domains are being registered at the rate of more than 300,000 per month- they go quickly!

How long does the registration process take?

BigWorldDomains.com's application process should only take a few minutes to complete. All registrations take place in real time. Once your application has been processed and approved, your name is registered.

Is it possible for someone to register my domain name after I have registered it?

The availability of .com, .net and .org domain names is verified through a central registry system. This system prevents a domain name that is successfully registered from being registered by another person or entity. Our registration and processing system updates the central registry in real time.

I've got my domain name, now what?

There are many things you can do with your new domain. Some people want to build a website for their corporate or personal use. You will need to contract out for separate web hosting- you can do a web search for hosting, and get thousands of results to choose from. Once you have hosting, obtain your new host's DNS (Domain Name Server) Information. Once you have their DNS info, you can return to the ItsYourDomain website and update your DNS records online, gaining access to our Management area with your username and password.

Or, if you have a free site (such as a members site with AOL or Geocities), you can point your domain there by using our URL-forwarding option.

Some will want to do email. Again, you can either use the host of your domain to set up a mailserver for you, or you can use our Email-forwarding service, which you can set up in the Management area.

Some just want to resell their domain name. In that case, you may certainly sell your new domain to whomever you like. Simply contact us to transfer the domain name to your buyer.

I own a new domain, but when I type it into my browser, nothing comes up.

Again, a domain name is not a website, just a web address for a website. If you want your new domain to be a web address for a website for your corporate or personal use, you must contact a web design/ hosting company. Once they have a website ready for you, we can "point" your new domain to that website. If you already have a website, and registered a new domain for it, be aware that some hosting companies do not accept a domain pointing to their host site (members.abigisp.com/your-abigisp-site~template1765, for example) Also, it may take a few days for the routing to point to your new host on an acceptable server.

What is a DNS?

DNS (Domain Name System) is a system that translates a domain name from letters (www.BigWorldDomains.com) into a numerical IP address  (209.15.147.172).

Each time you register a domain name you must specify your DNS information. If you register a domain name through BigWorldDomains.com, you can use BigWorldDomains's DNS information... free of charge! This is known in the industry as "parking" a domain- parking is free using BigWorldDomains.com's servers. You can also change the DNS information at any time... also free of charge, but be aware, your new DNS host may charge you a parking fee..

Why would I need to change my DNS information?

If you have a web site or an email account, your web hosting company or ISP will ask you to change your DNS information (typically, they would become the new DNS host) so that your domain name can be connected to your web site and your email account can be setup.

How do I change the DNS information for my Domain Name?

If you are changing DNS information on a domain name you registered with BigWorldDomains.com, begin by clicking the "Manage Domain" button in the left-hand menu bar.  You will be asked for the username and password you designated at the time you set up your domain account. If you have forgotten your username and password, you can have it emailed to the email address you have on account.

If you would like to change DNS information on a domain name you registered with a registrar other than BigWorldDomains.com, contact that domain's registrar.

How long does it take for DNS changes to take effect?

Typically, the DNS changes will be completed within 24 to 72 hours. This is standard Internet propagation time. The central registry databases update automatically.
